In Europe, plastics for food contact are subject to clearly defined legal requirements. The central regulation is Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, which specifies which substances may be used for the manufacture of plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. This is based on a "positive list" that includes approved starting substances, additives, and processing aids. This is supplemented by Framework Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004, which defines general requirements for all materials in contact with food. In Germany, the provisions of the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB) also apply.
A central component of the legal assessment is the migration of substances from the plastic into the food. The EU regulation sets specific limits for this. For example, the overall migration must not exceed 10 mg per dm² of contact surface or 60 mg per kg of food. In addition, individual specific migration limits (SML) apply to certain substances. These requirements ensure that no harmful amounts of substances are transferred to food. For buyers and design engineers, however, the material designation alone is not the deciding factor. The most important proof in practice is the Declaration of Compliance (DoC) from the manufacturer. It documents that a material or component meets the relevant requirements and is suitable for the intended food contact. Requirements for food-safe plastics
