On the way to creating your own polyurethane formula

Progress in the development of a unique polyurethane formulation to improve industrial applications and product safety.

The starting signal - Basics and initial considerations.

How can you develop your own polyurethane (PUR) formulation? At the start of the project, INTERNORM Kunststofftechnik focused on three possible scenarios: complete production by external service providers, a hybrid with in-house production of the prepolymer, or the complete in-house production of both components.

In order to find the right solution, the technical and safety-related requirements were analysed in detail. Since isocyanate — a central component of the prepolymer — is a hazardous substance, storage, temperature management and employee training had to be planned in detail.

Depending on the size of the reactor, there are different perspectives: With a laboratory system, formulations can be flexibly adapted, the pilot plant enables special batches and test series, while a production plant finally allows the step into series production. This is how our exciting journey in developing our own PUR system began — with the aim of creating innovative and high-performance materials.

From laboratory to pilot phase

Just a few months later, we were able to reach a major milestone: Our PUR formula was successfully transferred from the laboratory phase to the pilot plant phase. The tests carried out so far have shown excellent results — both in terms of mechanical and dynamic properties. Particularly pleasing: The recipe offers high chemical stability, good availability of raw materials and optimal scalability.

In the ongoing pilot plant phase, the focus was on transfer to industrial conditions. Process parameters were further refined and extensive tests were carried out to validate performance under real production conditions.
