Challenges and modes of action of flame retardant and fire protection additives.

When it comes to the fire safety of PUR systems, flame retardant additives are among the most important components. Their aim is to reduce the material’s flammability and minimise the effects of a fire as much as possible.

But how exactly do these additives manage to make a plastic more resistant to fire? What chemical processes are involved, and why do some materials burn significantly more slowly than others? We’ll be getting to the bottom of precisely these questions in this blog post.

Flame-retardant additives in PU: Balancing fire safety and material properties

Cast polyurethanes are indispensable in many industries for a wide range of applications due to their mechanical properties, such as high abrasion resistance and elasticity.

However, their chemical structure makes them susceptible to ignition and fire, which is a disadvantage, particularly in safety-critical applications. Within a PUR system, flame retardant additives are therefore an essential component for reducing flammability and intense fire behaviour, thereby minimising damage in the event of a fire.

The incorporation of flame retardant additives into cast polyurethane elastomers is chemically challenging. The additives must be compatible with the polyurethane system without interfering with the chemical cross-linking between polyols and isocyanates, or reacting with other existing additives. Some additives can impair mechanical properties such as elasticity and hardness.

PUR solutions for the most stringent fire safety requirements

An important point for production is the thermal stability of the selected additives: they must withstand the typical processing temperatures of PUR casting systems of up to 140 °C without degradation. Attention should also be paid to environmentally friendly additives. Halogen-free flame retardants are becoming increasingly important as environmental regulations and sustainability requirements grow. Phosphorus-nitrogen systems offer a promising alternative here.

The selection of the right flame retardant additives is therefore essential to specifically adapt PUR cast elastomers to the requirements of a wide range of applications. The balance between effective fire protection, mechanical performance, and long-term durability is crucial. As a manufacturer of tailor-made PUR casting solutions, we not only offer targeted additives but also cast the finished articles for our customers. With our expertise in material testing and manufacturing technology, we develop individually optimized PUR systems that are perfectly tailored to the specific requirements of your application. Whether you need thermally resilient, mechanically robust, or environmentally optimized solutions, we support you from the initial idea to the finished product.

One example of a practical use for polyurethane containing flame retardants is a fire-retardant mounting plate used in airports.
